An important aspect of a small wind system installation is to inform neighbors of your intentions. By providing sound explanation and educational materials, and offering open communication, many of the fears and misconceptions associated with small wind projects can be alleviated. Often the concerns of nearby neighbors involve visual and noise impacts and concerns regarding potential impact on property values. Thankfully, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) provides an informative letter that may be distributed to neighbors. An example of this letter can be found in a link that is included at the bottom of this page. Although a “Notice of Application” is typically required only for neighbors within 300 feet of property borders, it is recommended that the contact be made with all parties who may harbor concerns regarding the installation. This approach allows for the landowner to address concerns directly. Efforts to mitigate public concerns before seeking permitting can save money by alleviating potential public opposition if a public meeting is required to secure the necessary permits.
