The digital Virginia Wind Resource Map was developed by AWS Truewind, LLC to provide to Virginia stakeholders a reliable estimate of wind speeds across the Commonwealth with excellent spatial precision. Each data point on the map represents a 200x200-meter land mass (approximately 10 acres). The map was created especially for wind energy developers; however, the map provides an exceptional tool for assessment of small wind applications by landowners as well. The following instructions will guide you toward a personalized wind resource estimate in a matter of minutes.

Instructions
  1. If you know your Latitude and Longitude coordinates proceed to Step 4, otherwise continue to Step 2.
  2. On the menu-bar, click on Geo-Coordinates.
  3. Enter your address and click on Get Coordinates.
  4. On the menu-bar, click on Wind Information. If you arrived from Geo-Coordinates your Latitude and Longitude coordinates will be in the input textboxes. If not, please insert them now.
  5. At the bottom of the textboxes, click on Get Wind Info. The program will search through the wind map to acquire your wind resource data. Please be patient, this will take several minutes.
  6. When the center grid turns red, the site has completed the search. The center grid indicates the pixel that bests corresponds with your address, but keep in mind, this represents a 10–acre land mass. Each grid cell surrounding the center represents an additional 10–acre land mass, and the cell(s) that turn(s) yellow represent(s) the areas of predicted maximum wind speeds among the surrounding pixels. If more than one cell is yellow they represent equal velocities.
  7. You have the option of choosing any grid cell to apply to the analysis. You must click on See Data to link to the data for that cell. However, one-click options are provided if you wish to use the maximum wind speed of the surrounding grid, the center pixel that corresponds to the input address, or the average of the whole grid. If you choose the option of any point in the grid, you must click on Use Current to proceed forward. For the others, choose Use Maximum, Use Center, or Use Average.
  8. Regardless of the option chosen, you will be directed automatically to the Small Wind Economic Model.
