Among VWEC's activities are the technical research and analyses necessary to determine the potential for developing large, utility scale wind systems as a means to reclaim defunct coalfields in Southwestern Virginia. The Virginia Polytechnic Institute's, Alexandria Research Institute (VPI/ARI), in conjunction with the Virginia 's Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, is pioneering this effort. VPI/ARI provides technical research support to wind developers, as well as local, state, federal and private agencies.
